On September 1st, 2023 (National Wattle Day in Australia), I participated in tree planting at the ANU campus near Fenner School of Environment and Society. It was just after I moved to Canberra and started my sabbatical. I planted several seedlings with international students at Fenner and Forestry, following the instructions of a landscape and conservation staff member.
I liked the idea of planting trees on National Wattle Day, especially the international atmosphere of the volunteers - the students were from Australia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Korea, China, Japan (me), and so on.
I was also impressed by the ANU staff's passion for maintaining the campus's landscape. I asked him whether they were connected with Landcare. The answer was no, but I think their attitude and pride in keeping the vegetation and landscape healthy resonated with Landcare's core principle.
I was glad to kick off the first day of my sabbatical on-ground planting work.
